Mini Art School: Effective Graphic Design and Design Layout

Word Portraits

For this exercise (Krause, 2004), I chose 12 fonts and considered a "voice" for each.  In addition to two descriptors that amplify the meaning, I include a word that contradicts the look and feel of each selection.  During this activity, I tried to apply what I learned last week about color.  In reference to design, I confess that I am still guilty of a lot of centering.  But I did try to use some variety with justification, centering and placement.

Textural Composition

For the second activity I chose to create variations of texture for each heart. The one with the flower makes me smile--I grew that lily in my yard!  I like how using a 3-D effect gives a shape depth.  This activity was really interesting. Although the shapes are all the same size, the textures and colors really give them all a different feel. If you click on the photo, you can see a close up of the textures.

  1. Hello Christine,

Thank you for sharing your textural montage. All of the fonts you chose are associated with words and colors that bring to mind vivid images. This is the goal of every graphic designer, no? Presenting these words in a moving media really brought back in the objectives of our multimedia design course.

Your hearts design shows some very unique ways to represent a heart. I enjoyed looking at each of the designs up close; the textures seem almost real at times. I agree that the 3-D feature really enhances the image and makes it pop. It is difficult for students to comprehend how a 2-D image can have volume, and I think you found success in this exercise.

  2. Hello Christine,

The music brings another designer layer to the font description.

Your arrangement of the heart montage shows off the wonderful colors and textures and by placing the hearts in a pattern, it creates another level to compare and contrast.

  4. Hi Christine,

I love that you created your "Word Portraits" exercise in Animoto! I think that the addition of the music was a bold move - it could either have worked really well or been a bust. In my opinion, the music you selected was a *great* fit for this assignment! While each slide within the presentation has its own personality, as each font has its own distinct features, the possibility of the music clashing was a very real one. I appreciate your taking that risk! You made some great selections font-wise, and it's clear you took the time to select placement, background color, and size of each word set. Awesome attention to detail and REALLY well done!

I really liked Danielle's comment about students having issues comprehending how 2-D images can indeed have volume, and agree "wholeheartedly" that you've succeeded in doing so within this exercise.

    Great job!

  5. Hi Christine,

I loved your word portrait exercise. I particularly liked how you used the color as an additional layer of meaning. I struggled as to whether to use music in mine and I decided not to, but I agree that it really worked here. I think my favorite font was the green one that used the word grassy.

The texture exercise is really cool. The crumpled brown paper was my favorite as it almost gave the heart a 3D feel.

    Great job!

    Jess
